Jamie and Nikki Johansen, along with their son Morgan farm and ranch N.W. of Ryder in Ward County.  Jamie and Nikki both come from farming backgrounds.  They raise peas, wheat, durum, oats, canola, flax, and corn.  They also raise cattle and a variety of hay crops.  Jamie and Nikki plant some cover crops, which include, turnups, radishes, peas, oats, and wheat.  They have observed that by no tilling and cover cropping.  There has been an improvement with their water infiltration and soil health.  Jamie and Nikki do soil testing across all their farmland, and then incorporate variable rate fertilizing to make the best use of the fertilizer and to utilize the land more effectively.

With their cattle operations they spread manure on the fields close to home.  Jamie and Nikki feed their cattle in a different spot everyday on a couple of the fields.  The cattle do the work by stepping the manure into the ground, creating optimal soil health.  To conclude Jamie and Nikki have seen an improvement on their land from the practices they have incorporated.  The are excited to continue trying new things to keep improving their soil health.  Jamie and Nikki enjoy farming and ranching and feel so blessed to take care of God’s creation.
